I am currently serving as the Chair of the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Delaware Chapter, and for the last five years served as the Chairman of the Board. We are a small not-for-profit with 9 employees and a $2.0 million budget. Due to the current economic conditions, we, like other non-profits have experienced a downtown in revenues with a corresponding increase in requests for programs and services. We are very frugal and review our budgets very closely. As a separately incorporated entity, our governing board has a fiduciary responsibility for fiscal oversight, which includes preparation of our year end financial statements. Since our management team does not possess the skill sets to deal with external financial reporting, we engaged Michele to assist us in preparing for the year end closing and dealing with the external auditors. Michele delivered and for the first time in several years our Chapter was able to meet the demands and challenges that come with the year end audit. She interfaced extremely well with our staff and in a very short period of time she was knowledgeable and proficient with our systems and processes. Michele continues to provide timely, constructive advice to help us improve our monthly forecasting and budget comparisons. She is a high energy person and extremely dependable , which makes her service very valuable to our organization’s needs. I highly recommend her as someone who knows how to get things done, efficiently and professionally.  —Carl Hertrich
Portraits of MS Society Board MembersWe chose Michele Schina at the suggestion of a board member to help us convert from a cash to accrual for our annual audit. On staff we did not have the expertise. As the NMSS grew the expectation of the local chapter have grown from a bookkeeping need to a more sophisticated financial national reporting need. Michele came in, replacing a prior external accountant, and worked with our on staff bookkeeper. We completed the audit on time and accurately. She is able to speak the language and negotiate in between board members, staff members and national staff members, all with fluidity, grace and accuracy. While I would never say that providing external financial services is magic, I would ascertain that what Michele gave us was smooth transition, with no bumps or hiccups and a great degree of sensitivity to current staff and volunteers. Everyone came away with a feeling of accomplishment! —Kate Cowperthwait
